Webcam Test

Review #107896 about “Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000”

Webcam: Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000
Rating: Good (4 out of 5)
Date:

Advantages of the webcam:
Camera works out of the box on Arch Linux 5.18.2 (and presumably on other Linuxes). The mike works out of the box, too, when tested with Audacity, but this test page (for the cam) does not recognize it. (It might not be the Webcam's fault, as explained below.) It has a relatively low resolution (VGA, 30 fps), which I perceive as an advantage for video calls and conferences because that puts lower demands on the network and, presumably, means that picture freezes aren't much of a problem. The image quality is perfectly acceptable for this purpose. (In other words, a good compromise.)

Disadvantages of the webcam:
The mount takes some practice to master when used to clamp the cam atop your screen (though it can double as a stand, which is perhaps quite useful). The image quality might be too low for purposes other than video calls.
