Review #220158 about “Razer Kyio Pro Ultra”

Webcam: Razer Kyio Pro Ultra
Rating: Excellent (5 out of 5)

Advantages of the webcam:
The Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra delivers outstanding image quality, particularly thanks to its large 1/1.2-inch Sony STARVIS 2 sensor. The level of detail, natural background separation, low-light performance, and overall clarity are excellent. When properly configured, its 4K image quality rivals that of significantly more expensive cameras. I particularly appreciate the manual controls and the ability to achieve professional-looking results in OBS with customized lighting and LUTs. With my current USB-C connection, the camera produces excellent results and has eliminated my immediate need to invest in a much more expensive camera.
Disadvantages of the webcam:
The biggest weakness is its unreliable compatibility with macOS, particularly newer versions. I experienced a persistent black-screen issue in OBS, Camo Studio, and even Apple's Photo Booth, despite the camera functioning correctly on Windows. Troubleshooting was frustrating, especially given the lack of a clear solution. After considerable experimentation, switching to a direct USB-C-to-USB-C connection finally restored functionality. The software and compatibility experience do not match the quality of the hardware. A premium webcam should not require this much troubleshooting simply to function reliably, particularly when used for professional content creation.
Author’s comment:
I genuinely love the Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra's image quality. Having compared its footage in OBS and Camo Studio, and experimented extensively with lighting, LUTs, and recording settings, I believe it remains one of the most capable webcams available for serious content creation. However, Razer needs to improve macOS support, communication, and troubleshooting guidance. The hardware is exceptional, but the software experience has been unnecessarily frustrating. Now that I have it working properly through USB-C, I am extremely happy with the results. I was seriously considering spending approximately $1,200 CAD on an alternative camera, but the Kiyo Pro Ultra has convinced me to keep it and invest that money in upgrading my Mac instead.
